Hockey Officiating Clinic
with AHL Referee Keith Kaval

This clinic is intended for prospective and current ice hockey officials, from beginner to experienced. If you are a current ice hockey official, or if you have interest in becoming one, this clinic is for you! Improve your skating, positioning, communication, preparation, and rule knowledge to become a more effective and more confident official.

You will receive one-on-one training from professional referees and linesman with officiating experience in USA Hockey, the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), American Hockey League (AHL), ECHL, NCAA college hockey, and International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) tournaments.

Areas of emphasis include:

Proper skating for an official

Positioning
- why we skate in certain areas to see the play better
- why we stay away from certain areas to maintain our safety and the safety of players
- keeping you and the players safe while making the correct call

Communication with players, coaches, parents, and other officials
- "I put my arm up and blew the whistle....Now WHAT??"
- Difficult situations

How to prepare both on and off the ice
- Dealing with pressure and nerves

Knowing the rules and how to properly apply them

Q & A covering situations you may have encountered

Setting goals for your future as an official and how to get there

This clinic will reinforce what is presented in the annual USA Hockey officiating seminars, as well as add to your overall experience to enable you to be more comfortable both on and off the ice as an official.

The clinic will include:

2.5 hours of off-ice classroom instruction and discussion
1.5 hours of on-ice instruction and activities
Lunch break

About the instructors:

Keith Kaval

Keith has been a USA Hockey certified referee for 17 years, and has been officiating at the professional levels for 7 years, including the American Hockey League (AHL), ECHL, and Ontario Hockey League (OHL). Keith has also officiated at the World Under 18 Tournament and the recent World Under 20 Championship (IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship). Keith has been teaching power skating and positioning to elite hockey officials for over 5 years, including instructing officials in Stockholm, Sweden. Keith is a former Erie Youth Hockey & Cathedral Prep player.
